As lawmakers grapple with the issue of gun violence, it's essential to understand the true effects of policies on society as a whole. Policymakers must consider the costs and benefits of different laws, including those related to gun ownership, communities affected by violence, and other stakeholders. When crafting legislation, they should weigh the inherent trade-offs and base their decisions on facts and data.

The American Medical Association (AMA) has labeled firearm-related violence a public health crisis, citing that it now leads to more children's deaths than any other cause. Regrettably, many politicians prioritize their careers over the lives of children, often relying on empty rhetoric rather than evidence-based solutions.

A significant portion of the problem lies with access, particularly the proliferation of assault weapons. The estimated 400 million guns in the U.S., including 20 million assault rifles, contribute to an alarming rate of firearms per capita – over 120 per 100 Americans. Yoking gun violence to mental health issues is both inaccurate and stigmatizing, as fewer than 1 in 5 crimes are committed by those who struggle with mental illness.

It's also essential to note that mental health crises exist globally, often at a higher rate than in America. For instance, Spain had only 70 firearm deaths in 2022, while the U.S. recorded over 13,000. Moreover, countries like Greece, Spain, and Portugal have very low rates of gun deaths despite having high rates of depression.

The next time you head to the polls, remember that politicians who value their careers over children's lives are not serving the greater good. Instead, demand evidence-based policies that address the root causes of gun violence – access and availability. By doing so, we can create a safer society for all.
